Synopsis

This study focuses on the development of African
historiography within the East African region since
1960. It examines the different approaches and
interpretations of scholars inquiring into the
process, the nature of social and historical
knowledge. It delineates ~he various approaches
and interpretations in g~ven social environments
and epochs, identifies the causative-factors behind
emerging traditions of scholarship namely;
dominant political ideology, social background of
the. researchers and economic indicators. These
factors are conceived as the basic determinants of
the methodologies adopted in the human and social
sciences and are therefore important illuminants of
the body of knowledge under investigation.
