La situation sanitaire en Afrique est des plus alarmantes avec des pathologies multiples, e particulier le VIH/SIDA, qui freinent le développement humain et socio-économique du continent. L’état décrépite des systèmes de santé de l’Afrique se trouve être compliqué à plusieurs égards par des programmes macroéconomiques inadaptées qui exacerbent l’exode des ressources humaines.
Il existe aussi une crise dans les théories, les modèles et la construction des réponses à la situation qui, au demeurant, sont influencés par les concepts et
principes hégémoniques de l’occident datant de la colonisation. Ceux ci ignorent les aspects culturels, sociaux et politiques de la maladie dans les sociétés et communautés locales. Une re-conceptualisation de la question.
Cheikh Ibrahima Niang est enseignant chercheur à l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Sénégal. Il est spécialisé en Anthropologie Sociale et en Sciences de l’Environnement. Il a réalisé plusieurs travaux sur les aspects sociaux du VIH/SIDA et des problèmes de santé publique au Sénégal, en Côte d’Ivoire, au Rwanda, au Burkina Faso, en Gambie et en Guinée. Il a effectué plusieurs publications sur la sexualité, les impacts sociaux et politiques du VIH et les approches culturelles en matière de prévention des épidémies. Il a servi comme conseiller technique dans plusieurs organes des Nations Unies (ONUSIDA, OMS, Banque mondiale, PNUD, BIT, etc.). Il coordonne actuellement le Réseau SAHARA (Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance) pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest.
