Synopsis

This compilation originated from the South Africa in Africa’ research project initiated by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). The work advances the organisations’ agendas of promoting policy relevant and social scientific work that seeks to contribute to Africa’s development. Specifically, the collection explores the reciprocal political and economic impact of South Africa in Africa. South Africa’s role is contextualized within the global experience of regional powers , and the roles of South African government, business, social movements and civil society are interrogated. The selected literature attempts to contribute to existing knowledge by providing a document that is both empirically grounded and historical. Drawing from various disciplines including political science, anthropology, sociology, economics and geography, this annotated bibliography provides multiple theoretical approaches that are useful for scholars and practitioners interested in South Africa’s evolving identity and its contemporary relations with the continent.
